Katie Melua Biography

Katie Melua was born in 1984 in Soviet Georgia, a country that has recently been in conflict with Russia. She and her family moved to Belfast, Ireland when she was just eight years old. Seven years following her family's move to Ireland, Katie's family moved to Surrey, and Katie eventually enrolled in The BRIT Performing Arts and Technology School in London. Katie made her musical debut in 2003, and by 2006 she was the biggest-selling female British artist in the world. That same year she set a world record, playing live for the deepest underwater concert ever to be held. The concert took place in September of 2006, in a gas rig in the North Sea. Melua, along with her band, performed for two hours more than 300 meters below the ocean's surface in the North Sea.Katie Melua released her first album, Call off the Search, on November 3, 2006 and England went mad over its newest artist. Her style, somewhat similar to Norah Jones with vocal resemblance to Eva Cassidy, has something for everyone. With her captivating accent and velvety singing voice, Katie has captured the hearts of a wide fan base. Her first album was a comfortable and promising debut, with a hint of excellent things to come. The breezy debut sold over three million copies in Europe alone, showing that she was definitely an artist that had come to stay.The second album from Katie Melua was released on November 22, 2005 under the title Piece by Piece. The luxuriant follow-up to Call off the Search is definitely a solid second album, giving fans something satisfying, to hang their hats on. Her most recent album is the October 1, 2007 release Pictures which is another solid album with some excellent songs, several of which are written or co-written by Melua herself. This young star is definitely in the business of creating excellent music, and it will be exciting to see where she takes her craft in the future.
