"Kudai came together to pay tribute to the ‘80s Italian pop music that they grew up listening to. Formed in 2000, the original group was named Ciao but after only moderate success and one album, they renamed themselves Kudai. The name comes from the Mapudungun (native Chilean language) word kadau, which means ""young worker."" The Chilean youngsters debuted their sound in 2004 with the album Vuelo, with four vocalists -- Pablo, Tomas, Barbara and Nicole. Several of their singles found a core audience with teenagers, and Vuelo, which means ""flight"" in Spanish, allowed the album to reach platinum status and made them the top ranked Chilean group. The single ""Sin Despertar"" earned them a MTV Latin American Video Music Award nomination, and later the group was nominated for Best Artists - Central Region in the MTV Video Music Awards Latin America 2005. Later that year they released a DVD documenting heir 2004-2005 tour, titled En Vivo - Gira 2004-1005. Their sophomore effort appeared in 2006. Sobrevive debuted at number one in Chile and went gold. Though the album was doing well, Nicole Natalino left the group and was replaced by Gabriela Villalba. Several of the tracks were re-recorded to include Gaby in the album as Sobrevive was distributed across the nation. After changing their venue in 2007 (from Chile to Mexico), Kudai recorded their third studio album, Nadha. The album was released in May 2008 and again saw praise both commercially and critically. The album is the first to be released in the US, when it made its premiere in August 2008. The album was nominated for Best Pop Album by Group or Duet at the Latin Grammy Awards that year."
