"New York group Living Colour broke down the barrier that had separated the ""colours"" in the music industry.Living Colour began in 1985 by guitarist Vernon Reid who had for years dreamed about an all-black rock band. Reid, raised in Brooklyn by West Indian parents, first organized Living Colour in 1983. During the early years the group saw several different lineup changes and didn't see a final cut until 1986. That year Reid also created the Black Rock Coalition (BRC), which was designed to support African-American musicians in their paths toward mainstream success. In 1990 the organization had 175 individuals and 30 bands, though Living Colour remained the most successful group. After meeting vocalist Corey Glover at a party, then bassist Muzz Skillings and drummer Will Calhoun at BRC events, the group appeared at the Moers Jazz Festival in Europe in 1986. With the help of fellow rocker and fan Mick Jagger (who helped produce two of their songs), the boys secured a record deal with Epic. Their remixed LP Vivid appeared in 1988. The group saw commercial success almost instantly - the LP went double platinum and earned them a Grammy for best hard rock performance for the single ""Cult.""Later, Jagger asked the boys to join his group, The Rolling Stones, on their 1989 Steel Wheels tour. They created their next album, Time's Up, with the help of noted African-American musicians like Queen Latifah, Doug E. Fresh and Little Richard. The album was voted by The Rolling Stone's reader's polls as one of the best albums of the year, while Living Colour was voted one of the best bands.Living Colour joined Lollapalooza in 1991, and released an EP, Biscuits. They issued Stain in 1993 and after trying to create a new album, the group split in 1995. They reunited in 2001 with a tour, followed by several more albums."
