"Liz Story found her musical inspiration in improvisation.Story was born October 28, 1956 in San Diego. She was classically trained in piano, studying at Hunter College and Julliard. She lost her passion for music until she heard jazz pianist Bill Evans perform in New York, and after speaking to him after the show, she started studying with Sanford Gold, a teacher Evans recommended. She continued to study while also playing at a French restaurant, launching her career as a composer. She first appeared on the compilation by New Age leader William Ackerman for his album An Evening with Windham Hill, where she performed ""Spare Change."" She signed with Ackerman's label, who was becoming the pioneer of New Age music as he sought more acceptance from the mainstream, and she released her first solo album in 1983, called Solid Colors. The album was reviewed as a jazz piece, which was exactly what Story didn't want. She preferred to categorize herself in a style all her own, incorporating modern jazz, classical and pop music elements. She released two album in the 1990s, My Foolish Heart, and Liz Story. Her husband, bassist Joel DiBartolo, performed on both albums. Her next album, 17 Seconds to Anywhere, was her first album in a decade. She recently signed with DMI after working for years with Windham Hill and RCA Records. Her most recent album, Night Sky Essays, was released in 2005."
