"Though his star has largely faded, Mack 10 was one of the biggest names in the West Coast game during the rise of gangsta rap. The '90s saw plenty of artists who were around for just a few hits and then disappeared. Mack 10 offered a whole litany of songs that proved popular before the '90s were out, though he's still recording today.Growing up in Inglewood, L.A., Dedrick D'Mon Rolison (better known as Mack 10) grew up among the same poverty that rappers like Ice Cube experienced. While a talented rapper, he wouldn't see much national recognition until the release of Friday, which starred Cube. Mack 10's single ""Take a Hit"" was featured on the film's soundtrack, and earned him some notice. The same year, he released his self-titled debut, which included a few guest appearances by Cube, and rose to number two on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-hop Albums chart.Joining with Cube and WC, they formed a group entitled Westside Connection and released Bow Down, which reached a peak position of number two on the Billboard 200. He also released several more hit songs for movie soundtracks, including Rhyme & Reason (""Nuthin' but the Cavi Hit"") and The Substitute (""Hoo-bangin'""). His sophomore album, Based on a True Story, would continue his commercial rise with ""Backyard Boogie,"" a single that rose to number five on the Hot Rap Singles chart. His follow-up, 1998's The Recipe, featured ""Money's Just a Touch Away,"" which became Mack 10's biggest career hit. He formed his own label at this time, Hoo-Bangin' Records, and just a couple years later released The Paper Route, which, while a solid release, didn't make its presence felt on the Billboard charts. His popularity began to descend rapidly at this point, though Mack 10 has released numerous records since."
