It is difficult to match the talent and success of Latin queen Jennifer Lopez, but her husband, the multi-talented Marc Anthony may have done it. The Latin musician has successfully crossed over from being a Salsa star to recording English-language megahits while maintaining integrity and authenticity that prevents him from being lumped in with fellow English convert heartthrob Ricky Martin.Born Marco Antonio Muniz, the singer was raised on Latin musicians Hector Lavoe, Rubén Blades and Willie Colón as well as pop mainstays like Air Supply. Anthony was discovered at age 12 with his sisters by demo and commercial producer David Harris, who hired the young singer to lend his vocals to the background of several productions. His early gigs led to a background track on Safire's debut album, in which Anthony also penned Top 40 hip-hop track "Boy, I've Been Told," as well as vocals for Menudo and the Latin Rascals. Anthony's debut album, When the Night Is Over (1991) featured a version of Latin hip-hop and earned him a spot on Billboard's dance music charts for single "Ride on the Rhythm;" it would not be the last time Marc Anthony's spicy salsa would inspire dance moves out of his audience.Anthony, who is now the biggest selling salsa artist of all time, went with his roots on his second album Otra Nota, followed by 1995's Todo a Su Tiempo and 1999's Contra la Corriente, which earned Anthony a Grammy for Best Tropical Latin Performance. That same year Anthony debuted his first English-language record. The eponymous album would harbor the hit "I Need to Know," which rose to number three on the Billboard Top Ten. Marc Anthony honed his acting talent by appearing in films like Big Night and the buzzed-about biopic El Cantante co-starring his wife while continuing to release both Spanish and English-language albums that display his signature salsa sound.
