Cohn was influenced by the sounds of music at an early age, picking up on the work of greats like Van Morrison, whom he continuously cites as an enormous influence in his life. Other musicians that caught Cohn's attention were Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne. He drew upon the successful sounds of these artists before him and plunged into the music industry by learning how to play the piano. In middle school, he joined a small band and stuck with them until he left for college. Mark Cohn never stopped studying the art of songwriting and sharpened his focus throughout his time at the university.Cohn started out small, performing at local venues throughout Los Angeles and eventually wound up in New York City where he formed the band called the Supreme Court. Cohn, though, always had his eyes set on a solo career and landed a record deal with the Atlantic label. He released his first album soon after he signed and rode the waves of success with his popular single called Walking in Memphis. Because of his efforts, he won a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1992.The following year he released the album The Rainy Season and proved to be an exceptional complement to Cohn's debut.
