The members of Marcy Playground initially met in New York City during the mid 1990s and immediately set about defining their sound and their style as a dramatic and reflective addition to the post-grunge and alternative pop/rock scene. The small group gained notable attention by recording demo tapes and playing in local clubs around New York City. Eventually, they were granted a recording contract with Capitol Records, and the band subsequently released their self-titled debut to the world in February of 1997. It took a few months for their innovative sound to catch on, but fans certainly found something to like with the group's first single called Sex and Candy. The song helped to push the album up high on the U.S. charts, and before long everyone seemed to know of the band Marcy Playground.Their first album received wide praise mainly because of Sex and Candy but also due to their many different styles, which are evident on the record. They dive into the sounds of folk, psychedlia and rock, making for an interesting compilation and surely one that has never before been experimented with previously. Marcy Playground followed up their first successful showing with the 1999 album Shapeshifter. Unfortunately, the album tanked on the charts and receive lukewarm acceptance from music critics. Many bands, who see massive hits with their first album, struggle to maintain their footing when it comes to their sophomore records. The same held true for Marcy Playground.Marcy Playground released their third album called MP3 in 2004 after a hiatus and the album also flopped, achieving less commercial success than the previous two. For a band that was obviously trying to find their footing in the music world, Marcy Playground has not given up. When one listens to their incredibly popular first single, Sex and Candy one can see the potential that still lies within the band's talents. So keep an eye for future releases.
