The massively popular television show Grey's Anatomy has been known for introducing the world to great music artists, so it comes as no surprise that Mat Kearney was one of the artists whose songs were featured on the show. Kearney brings influences of hip-hop and folk and creates a music that not only showcases his immense musical talent but also emotionally connects with his audience. Kearney grew up in Oregon and was more interested in sports than music as a youth. It was his soccer talent that got him a soccer scholarship to a college in California, an experience that would chance his path completely.Kearney discovered his love for folk sounds while at college and was soon thinking about a career in music. He made friends with producer Robert Marvin and traveled with him to Nashville, Tennessee the summer after his junior year. There, Kearney started drawing interest from record labels, but didn't want his sound influenced by bottom-line driven corporations. He turned down record deals and instead started working on his debut album with Marvin. He stayed in Nashville and continued to write and record new material. When he was finished, he signed with Inpop Records to release the album, meaning Kearney had complete creative control. The resulting album, Bullet, dropped in 2004 and featured songs about Kearney's different life experiences. The album created a buzz around the new musician, who switched to Aware/Columbia to release his sophomore album, Nothing Left to Lose, in 2006. The album had stronger guitar work in it and fans loved Kearney's sound. The album reached number two on the Top Heatseekers chart that same year and number 109 on the Billboard 200 in 2007. The album also featured singles that fans latched on to as favorites. Those same fans are waiting for what this new artist will do next.
