"Matchbox Twenty is one of the few, if not only, group from the post-grunge era of the mid and late 1990s to keep their sound fresh enough to stay relevant even in today's modern music scene. Probably the most well-known of the band members is singer/songwriter Rob Thomas. Thomas grew up as an Army brat and his constant moving led to him dropping out of school when he was 17 years old. He turned to music and soon met Brian Yale and Paul Doucette in Orlando Florida. It was with this trio of Thomas on vocals, Yale on bass and Doucette on drums that starte Matchbox Twenty, and they soon added Adam Gaynor on rhythm guitar and vocals and Kyle Cook on lead guitar. The band started performing and releasing demos and soon has a record deal with Lava. They released their debut album, Yourself or Someone Like You, in 1996. The album didn't instantly cause any stir, but a rigorous touring schedule helped get some of the singles to the chart like ""Push,"" ""Long Day"" and ""3 AM."" The album ended up climbing all the way to number five on the Billboard 200 by 1997. They were also creating a fan base abroad. In 199, Thomas collaborated with Santana on ""Smooth,"" which ended up a success in and of itself. The band was not poised for even more success as fans waited for their sophomore album. Mad Season dropped in 2000 and reached number three on the Billboard 200. The follow up, More Than You Think You Are, came in 2002 and did nearly as well as the two before it. The band members decided to take a break, and Thomas released a solo album in 2005. The band came back together to release Exile on Mainstream in 2007, which put the band back on top by reached number three on the Billboard 200. The album featured new work as well as some of the band's old favorites."
