"Psychedelia may bring to mind the euphoric sounds of the 1970s, but when Mazzy Star revisited the genre in the 1990s, they brought to stage the darker, heavier sounds of the classic style. In the 1980s, guitarist David Roback was in Rain Parade with his brother, which had a sound reminiscent of psychedelia. Roback moved on to the band Opal with bassist Kendra Smith from Dream Syndicate. Although vocalist Hope Sandoval was only in her teens, she was noticed by Smith, who introduced her sound to Roback. Smith left Opal and Sandoval joined, leading to a tour. Afterwards, Roback and Sandoval formed Mazzy Star.Mazzy Star's lineup over the years has featured many different musicians, but the core has always been Roback and Sandoval. They released their debut, She Hands Brightly, in 1990 on Rough Trade Records and the dark sound was hard to swallow by most but eagerly embraced by others. They switched to Capitol Records after Rough Trade closed in 1991, and Capitol re-released their debut album in 1991. They released their sophomore album, So Tonight That I Might See, in 1993. The album reached number 36 on the Billboard 200 chart the next year after the success of the single ""Fade Into You.""The band took another three years before releasing their third album, Among My Swan, which dropped in 1996. The album didn't do as well as their second release, but still made it to number 68 on the Billboard 200 chart. The band went their separate ways after the tour accompanying Among My Swan. Sandoval released a solo album in 2001 with Colm O' Ciosoig and Bert Jansch. Mazzy Star has come together for performances sporadically since their last album and has yet to declare whether or not the band will ever make another album."
