Mobb Deep Biography

They go by the moniker Mobb Deep, but the duo of Prodigy and Havoc should be called the comeback kings. These East Coast rappers have had their fill of ups and downs, emerging in their glory as New York's hardcore rap gurus. Mobb Deep has recorded numerous number one albums and singles since the mid-‘90s, and the potential for more to come is yet again probable.Mobb Deep emerged out of a friendship between Prodigy (Albert Johnson) and Havoc (Kejuan Muchita) in Queens, New York. The two young men met at Graphic Arts High School in Manhattan, their shared love for hip-hop a bonding force. Island Records' 4th & Broadway took notice of the duo while they were still teens, and in 1993 the label released Mobb Deep's debut album, Juvenile Hell. Disappearing from the scene in a fleeting moment, the duo came back two years later to release The Infamous with Loud Records, leading the pack with a pushier and more hardcore rap style than was the trend in East Coast rap at the time. 1996's follow-up album Hell on Earth put the rappers on top of the hip-hop scene among big-timers like Nas and Notorious B.I.G., but by the time Mobb Deep released their next album Murda Muzik in 1999, the rap winds had shifted dramatically and the duo got left in the dust.Restructuring their hip-hop baseline and innovative mix, Mobb Deep resurfaced once again in 2001 with the album Infamy, putting their name back on the charts with the crossover R&B single "Hey Luv." 2002-2005 caught Mobb Deep slipping from their top position again, however, and it wasn't until 2006 that the group underwent rejuvenation - this time, after 50 Cent signed the duo to his G-Unit family. 2006's Blood Money was an instant number one on the R&B/Hip-Hop charts, and although the group is on another break due to Prodigy's jail time, Mobb Deep's pattern shows they'll be back on top in no time.
