"Cartoonist, DJ and producer Mr. Scruff keeps things light and easy. After finding music in the ‘80s, he started obsessing over his father's Prince Buster singles and started exploring mixing as a teen. Inspired by a family friend's DJ heavy LP, Andy Carthy (aka Mr. Scruff) began creating his first rudimentary mix tapes and compilations. Throughout the ‘80s the Manchester native continued to experiment with dance music, which consisted of everything from hip hop to reggae and soul to electronica, and honed his disc jockey skills enough to hear some mixes on local radio stations. Making an effort to retain a large musical repertoire, Carthy learned about as much as he could while working at Kwik Save.In 1994 he met Barney Doodlebug, a disc jockey who gave the budding DJ his first club gig while also throwing his tape at a local record label, Rob's. Formerly ""Funky Scruff,"" when his 12"" was released the short bearded Carthy renamed himself Mr. Scruff. The single allowed Mr. Scruff to expand his resume, working at more clubs alongside other likeminded DJs. His 1995 track ""Sea Mammal"" earned wide critical and commercial acclaim for the DJ, extending Carthy's reputation farther than local clubs and stations.Throughout the ‘90s he held residencies at Off-Centre in London, signed with Ninja Tune, performed abroad with Grand Central and toured with Roots Manuva, The Herbaliser and others. Keep it Unreal, his debut with Ninja, allowed him to create totally unique music and commence Manchester night club tours. Mr. Scruff's newest album, Ninja Tuna, appeared in 2008 and had its first few singles shoot to the top of the charts."
