Mya

Mya Biography

"At just 18, Mya released her eponymous debut with Interscope. Before her smooth dance skills and sultry voice hit MTV and radio stations, her albums was practically free at record stores. After critics heard the Washington DC native's soul rhythms and contemporary beats, she was on the fast track to R&B success. Born in Baltimore, MD, Mya grew up on dance - tapping with the juniors group T.W.A. (Tappers with Attitude) before moving to New York to study at the Dance Theater of Harlem with Savion Glover (the choreographer behind the Broadway hit Bring in da Noise, Bring in da Funk). At the same time her dancing career took off, her musically ambitious father, also a professional musician, began sending Mya's demo tapes to record companies and grabbed the attention of Haqq Islam, president of University Music. With Islam, Mya signed to Interscope Records and from there created her debut album. After working with a plethora of R&B veterans like Babyface, Wyclef Jean and Missy ""Misdemeanor"" Elliot, Mya continued on her R&B reign with 2000's Fear of Flying. The album shed her youthful image thanks to production work by the late Left-Eye of TLC and Jadakiss. Just three years later she presented Moodring, an even deeper stylistic change from her debut and sophomore effort that presented a cattier side of the now California-based artist. Shedding her innocence, Mya appeared in the Academy Award winning film Chicago, and sang for the Grammy winning single ""Lady Marmalade,"" along with Pink, Christina Aguilera, Pink and Lil' Kim.Since Moodring, Mya was musically inactive as she worked on her fourth studio album with her new record company, Motown, and new home (having moved back to DC). Liberation appeared in 2007 and featured dance singles as well as some romantic ballads."

"R&B artist Mya hasn't limited herself to the music industry - though with a voice as powerful as hers, she could. Trained as both a dancer and a singer when she was young, Mya found the music industry calling when she was just 18 years old and released her debut album with Interscope. The debut took a while to find the ears of R&B fans and critics, but when it finally did Mya's eponymous album hit the charts strong and allowed her continue on a path toward musical efficiency. As her career skyrocketed, the Washington DC native controlled her sound musically while showcasing her talents in other entertainment arenas. As her debut album went platinum, she saw success with the single ""Ghetto Superstar"" from the Bulworth soundtrack and starred in the 2003 film Chicago. Since earning the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by the Cast of a Theatrical Motion Picture, Mya has continued to pursue acting but releases her emotions through music, which is why 2007's Liberation was such a trying experience. From her most recent album the singles ""Ridin'"" and ""Lock U Down"" appear on PlayPhone's website; if you've been a fan of Mya's since her musical conception in the late ‘90s or fell for the scantily clad dancer during her onscreen performances in Chicago or Havana Nights, then get Mya's latest work for your next ringtone!"
