"At just 18, Mya released her eponymous debut with Interscope. Before her smooth dance skills and sultry voice hit MTV and radio stations, her albums was practically free at record stores. After critics heard the Washington DC native's soul rhythms and contemporary beats, she was on the fast track to R&B success. Born in Baltimore, MD, Mya grew up on dance - tapping with the juniors group T.W.A. (Tappers with Attitude) before moving to New York to study at the Dance Theater of Harlem with Savion Glover (the choreographer behind the Broadway hit Bring in da Noise, Bring in da Funk). At the same time her dancing career took off, her musically ambitious father, also a professional musician, began sending Mya's demo tapes to record companies and grabbed the attention of Haqq Islam, president of University Music. With Islam, Mya signed to Interscope Records and from there created her debut album. After working with a plethora of R&B veterans like Babyface, Wyclef Jean and Missy ""Misdemeanor"" Elliot, Mya continued on her R&B reign with 2000's Fear of Flying. The album shed her youthful image thanks to production work by the late Left-Eye of TLC and Jadakiss. Just three years later she presented Moodring, an even deeper stylistic change from her debut and sophomore effort that presented a cattier side of the now California-based artist. Shedding her innocence, Mya appeared in the Academy Award winning film Chicago, and sang for the Grammy winning single ""Lady Marmalade,"" along with Pink, Christina Aguilera, Pink and Lil' Kim.Since Moodring, Mya was musically inactive as she worked on her fourth studio album with her new record company, Motown, and new home (having moved back to DC). Liberation appeared in 2007 and featured dance singles as well as some romantic ballads."
