Mystikal

Mystikal Biography

New Orleans-raised rapper Michael Tyler, better known by his stage name Mystikal, could drop a beat like no one else in the 1990s and early 2000s, and he often did so with a mouth full of expletives and without any apologies. The artist from the Dirty South represents a raucous underground rap style similar to that of rapper Master P, whose No Limit record label Mystikal got his start from.Mystikal released his self-titled debut album in 1995 with an independent label, and his first major-label debut Mind of Mystikal came a year later in 1996. The album was a great success among fans of underground rap, and almost went gold. Master P and No Limit collaborated with Mystikal for his next album Unpredictable, and his success skyrocketed from there. Mystikal's 1999 album release Ghetto Fabulous fell just short of debuting at number one on the charts, and his next album, 2000's Let's Get Ready, sold even better than his previous work. The hit song "Shake Ya Ass" from Let's Get Ready was an instant hit, and it also stereotyped Mystikal as the ghetto James Brown, noting the resemblance between the artists as they both tend to yell out random signature howls, sounds and phrases in the middle of their songs. In 2001, Mystikal's Tarantula continued his streak as a vulgar but lively rap icon, producing songs like "Bouncin' Back (Bumpin' Me Against the Wall)" and "Big Truck Driver." Big-name producers like KLC, The Neptunes, Rockwilder and Scott Storch led the way for Mystikal, and his success in the rap world just kept rising. Mystikal was nominated for two Grammys in 2002; one for Best Male Rap Solo Performance, and one for Best Rap Album. Mystikal's last album, Prince of the South, was released in 2004, and is comprised of his greatest hits up to that point.

From words like "'chea" to phrases like "watch ya self," Mystikal has added a fresh new angle to the wide world of rap over the years. Once he left the safety of Master P's wing, Mystikal needed little guidance to learn to fly. From the rap underground scene to discovering his own artistic and expressionistic style, Mystikal has achieved great respect among rappers and great success with fans. Though many of his songs are both rough and explicitly crude, the almost jungle-like raw beats he drops lines to can keep anyone humming his songs, especially "Shake Ya Ass," all day long (but watch ya self).Mystikal's range of experience and music can be found on Playphone as both music and polyphonic ringtones, representing his dominance in the rap world for over a decade. His classic song "If It Ain't Live It Ain't Me" exudes the rapper's sense of confidence, while "Danger" shows Mystikal's modern resemblance to James Brown, with random words flying out during the entirety of the song. "Ya'll Ain't Ready Yet," off his very first album Mystikal, is a more hard-core Dirty South rap song, no doubt influenced by the mastermind of Master P.
