Poison Clan

Poison Clan Biography

"Poison Clan is yet another rap group that helped to spark tons of young budding rappers and free-stylers to work on their music as the group began to gain fame. Poison Clan began as a 2 Live Crew sponsored group. 2 Live Crew went hand in hand with controversy and explicit content, and had a fairly successful career, though whether it was sparked by their X-rated content or by their fairly innovative material is difficult to tell. Thus, when the original Poison Clan duo first emerged on 2 Live Crew's 1990 album 2 Low Life Muthas, it would be no surprise to many that their content and style were similar to the Supreme Court-favorite group. The Miami rappers, Debonaire and J.T. Money, impressed Luke Records enough for them to not only give the boys a record contract but also sign them up to work with 2 Live Crew's DJ, Mr. Mixx. 2 Low Life Muthas saw moderate commercial success for the boys, particularly in their South neighborhoods, but their second album, Poisonous Mentality, was their true breakout hit. The single ""Shake Watcha Mama Gave Ya"" was a mega-hit (though it never made the Billboard charts). After the success of the second album, the group saw almost total control by J.T. Money, who forced the formerly ""collective"" group toward a more solo project.Though Poison Clan's next few albums were successful, none saw the hit single success like that of ""Shake Whatcha Mama Gave Ya"" (though others did make the Billboard charts). As no surprise to many, out of J.T. Money's success, tensions arose and the group split. J.T. Money worked on his solo album, while the record label released a The Best of J.T. Money & Poison Clan album."

"Poison Clan's success was sparked by their sponsorship with other X-rated rap group 2 Live Crew. The Miami rappers, Debonaire and J.T. Money, saw a fair amount of commercial success in their four albums together before going their separate ways. The duo was mostly led by J.T. Money, who started seeing success after Poison Clan's second album, Poisonous Mentality, hit the mainstream charts and expanded their fan base from outside their Southern comfort. The album made Billboard Heatseekers, peaking at the 20th spot on the charts, as well as the Top R&B, Hip-Hop Albums. The next few albums, including the Luke Records released The Best of J.T. Money & Poison Clan that came after the group went on hiatus, mostly focused on the solo work of J.T. Money. While the rap group worked as a collection, the true success lies with J.T. Money, and so once he focused on a solo career he saw success with some of his own singles. Nonetheless, Poison Clan's work is iconic for marking the start as one of the few successful deep South rap groups. Their sleazy style and explicit content made for great dance-club beats and will make for a great ringtone. The single ""In My Nature"" is currently available for ringtone download, so check it out!"
