"The pop/rock artist Robert John is probably best known for his ballad, ""Sad Eyes,"" which reached the number one spot on the charts in 1979, but John got his start in the music business long before then, back in the 1950s as a doo wop singer. It took a few decades for him to achieve that number one hit song, but for John, it was well worth the wait. Robert John was born as Robert John Pedrick Jr. in Brooklyn in 1946. He made his debut in the industry with the single ""White Bucks and Saddle Shoes."" He soon followed up with another hit song, ""Pajama Party,"" and both made high marks on the charts. He spent much of his early time as a recording artist moving to different labels and trying to find his particular niche. The 1960s proved to be a slow period for the singer when he fronted the short-lived ensemble Bobby and the Consoles. As the 1970s started, however, Robert John saw more opportunities to perfect his style and demonstrate his abilities to reach a wide variety of listeners around the globe. He signed on with Atlantic Records and released the smash hit cover of the song ""The Lion Sleeps Tonight,"" which scored a spot in the Top Ten. After a lull in the mid 1970s, Robert John made a splash in 1979 with the single ""Sad Eyes.""""Sad Eyes"" proved to be Robert John's first claim to the number one spot on the charts, and the song emerged from his album Night Songs. While ""Sad Eyes"" made an impact on the industry, no other Robert John songs could achieve similar success. His last spot on the charts came in 1983 with a remake of the song ""Bread and Butter."" Robert John caught many people's attention with his soft rock style, and he continues to generate fans from across the world."
