"It may be easy to quickly categorize the music of the 1980s rock band Romeo Void as dance inspiring group with controversially sexual lyrics, but doing so would not give credit to their immense variety of sounds and lyrics, which touched on everything from murder to homelessness. The band started to take shape when lead singer Debora Iyall moved from Fresno, California to San Francisco in the mid 1970s and enrolled in the San Francisco Art Institute. Also attending the institute were Peter Woods and Jay Derrah, who were already in a group together that had a 1960s sound and was named the Mummers and the Poppers. They took on Iyall as their lead singer.Iyall not only added her stunning vocals, but she also brought a depth to the group previously missing. They added another artist, Frank Zincavage, on bass, who also worked with Iyall on the band's songs. The music scene in San Francisco during that period was bursting with punk and post-punk sounds, further influencing the group. Their name changed to Romeo Void early in 1979 and added Benjamin Bossi on saxophone. Their fist single was ""White Sweater,"" which they recorded along with a cover of Jorgen Ingmann's ""Apache"" and released on 415 Records. They began working on their debut album, losing Derrah and adding John Haines on drums. They released It's a Condition in 1981, which caused a massive underground following. They then released the massively popular single and an EP, both titled ""Never Say Never,"" which led to a major deal with Columbia Records. They released their sophomore album, Benefactor, along with drummer Larry Carter. The album was much more commercialized than their previous release, gaining more fans but losing some of their faithful early fans. Romeo Void followed the release with the successful Instincts in 1984, an album that brought the band back to their earlier sound. The group broke up in 1985. Members joined other bands and launched solo careers after the breakup. They came back together for a brief reunion in 2004 for the VH1 special Bands Reunited. "
