Sammy Davis Jr. is still thought of as one of the world's best entertainers and is remembered especially for his time with the famous Rat Pack, with Frank Sinatra at the helm of the outfit. His singing and dancing mesmerized audiences for years when he performed at well known clubs and bars throughout the United States. Fans would flock to see Sammy and the rest of the pack appear regularly in the bright lights of Las Vegas and eventually Sammy Davis Jr. became an icon of coolness. He has held onto that title even after his death, with younger generations catching onto the popularity of the once reigning Rat Pack.Sammy Davis Jr. was born in Harlem on December 8, 1945 and made his stage debut at an early age. In 1943 Davis joined the army only to return home with an even stronger passion for performing. His impersonation skills displayed during his time with the Will Mastin Trio helped propel him into the spotlight in the comedy circuit. One of his big breaks came when Frank Sinatra invited Davis and the rest of the members of the trio to perform at the newly integrated Copacabana. In 1954 Davis signed to Decca Records and topped the charts with his debut LP titled Starring Sammy Davis Jr.In 1959 he officially became a charter member of the Rat Pack along with Dean Martin, Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop, with Sinatra often thought of as the pack leader. They regularly performed together at the Sands casino in Las Vegas as well as starred in many films together, including Ocean's Eleven and Sergeants 3. Davis also became well known for his Broadway career and scored parts in the long running production of Golden Boy, for which he earned a Tony nomination. The 1960's saw Davis expanding his film career, alongside other great names like Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra. As time wore on though, Davis's name slowly faded from popularity and in 1990 the legendary performer succumbed to cancer.
