Talk about having a large shadow to climb out of. As the son of legendary musician John Lennon, Sean Lennon had a lot to live up to when he embarked on his own musical career, but he's exceeded expectations in the eyes of indie fans. Sounding eerily like his father at times and bursting with uniqueness at others, Lennon blends his angelic vocal abilities with melodic genius that serves as a breath of fresh air in a music industry dominated by pop and hip-hop.As the offspring of perhaps the most talented Beatle and Yoko Ono, Lennon was famous before he could even walk. After his father's murder though, young Sean spent much of his childhood in relative seclusion. While receiving the finest of educations, Lennon showed the fruits of his musical gene pool at a very young age and appeared on several of his mother's albums. In the early 1990s, Lennon, along with his mother and Lenny Kravitz, organized a re-recording of his father's "Give Peace a Chance" in protest of the ongoing Gulf War.After dropping out of college, Lennon spent some time frequenting New York's indie rock scene, an influence that comes through loud and clear in his music. After touring with several groups, he finally released his first album, Into the Sun, in 1998. The record garnered more attention for his name than the actual music, but did earn Lennon some fans of his own.Lennon toiled in relative musical obscurity for the next eight years until he released his second LP in the form of 2006's Friendly Fire. The piano-driven record makes no secret of the fact that Lennon is the son of the Beatle great. The emotionally-charged disc details a messy breakup with a girlfriend inspired by true life events. Moods on the disc range from somber to upbeat, but most have at least a twist of melancholy added in somewhere. The record exudes a lot of qualities that are reminiscent of the ‘60s, and its choruses are catchy without being too poppy. Friendly Fire shows that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree and makes Sean Lennon an artist to really keep an eye on.
