"Simon and Garfunkel were synonymous with folk pop music. Both from the Forest Hills neighborhood in Queens, after recording on their own in Manhattan, ""Tom and Jerry"" (as they were first called) landed a recording deal in 1957. Their first 45, ""Hey, Schoolgirl"" was a modern hit as they appeared on the television show American Bandstand their senior year of high school. Wanting to make a ""real"" living, Garfunkel went off to Columbia but reunited with Simon in 1964. Renaming themselves ""Simon and Garfunkel"" in late 1963, just as the height of the folk-music industry was at its boom, the duo was signed to Columbia Records and paired with producer Roy Halee. Their album Wednesday Morning 3 AM saw only a fair amount of success, that is, until the single ""Sound of Silence"" was remixed with a few more percussion instruments. After its new release in 1965, the single had topped the pop chart singles and just a month later was certified gold.Their second Columbia album, Sounds of Silence, peaked at number 21 on the American album chart. They continued to create hit singles throughout the next few years, including ""Homeward Bound"" ""Dangling Conversation,"" and ""Fakin' It."" Around the time their third album appeared, they had appeared at the Monterey International Pop Festival in California and were contracted to contribute to the soundtrack for the film The Graduate. The film would see one of their most famous singles ever, in the form of ""Mrs. Robinson."" The single earned them the first of what would become a long list of Grammy Awards, shortly followed by the album Bridge Over Troubled Water, with the title-track immediately surpassing that of ""Mrs. Robinson."" Up until the 70s, they created over six albums together, won five Grammy's and received the Britannia Award for ""Best International Pop LP and Single, 1952-1977 for ""Bridge Over Troubled Water.""After that, the two parted to focus on some of their own interests, reuniting for Concert in Central Park, which was made into a live double album, released in 1982. Their Greatest Hits album remained on the charts for 131 weeks in the US and sold 14 million copies. The two were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990."
