Switchfoot is widely known amongst their dedicated fan base as interweaving elements of pop, electronic and industrial, creating a sound that is most definitely all their own. The group first gained mainstream praise after four of their songs were included in the hit 2002 movie, A Walk to Remember. Only one year later, their major label debut The Beautiful Letdown, which included some of their best known singles "Meant to Live" and "This is Your Life," was released to the public.Switchfoot was originally founded in 1996, and their first album that reached considerable success was Learning to Breathe, which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Gospel Album. They also touted two other albums under their belt, both of which also received favorable reviews, but were not nearly as popular as Learning to Breathe with "I Dare You to Move" and "You Already Take Me There." Switchfoot was gearing up for their impressive showing on the big screen with A Walk to Remember and had ideas for their next big success The Beautiful Letdown. The distinctive indie sound coming from the album guaranteed Switchfoot a spot on the world music stage in the years to come. In 2005, the band was presented with five Dove Award nominations, and they won four of them, including the respected "Artist of the Year Award."In the following years, Switchfoot continued to build upon their success, releasing Nothing is Sound, which debuted at the number three spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart as well as Oh! Gravity, which earned considerable critical acclaim and entered the Billboard chart at number 18 and peaked at number one on iTunes, spawned the singles "Dirty Second Hands," "Awakening" and "Head Over Heels (In This Life)."In 2007, the band decided to go independent and reclaim their original characterization of an indie band. With their fresh new status, they embarked on tour with other well known bands, that benefited the charity Habitat For Humanity. Switchfoot is long noted for their involvement with the Christian rock scene, although they continuously steer clear of trying to be preachy and instead focus on inspirational lyrics, designed to evoke passion and understanding in their listeners.Obviously Switchfoot has succeeded in gathering plenty of passionate supporters over the years, and they will continue to pave the way to creating a new kind of music, every step they take to the top of the charts.
