Technotronic Biography

Part of a wave of popular dance club bands to take over the airwaves in the early '90s, Technotronic meshed house beats with hip-hop vocals, producing a sound that was distinctively of it's time. With hits like "Pump Up the Jam" and "Move it to the Rhythm," they became known for making perennial party grooves that everyone could enjoy. Though their success and time in the spotlight was brief, their songs are still remembered and loved. The group was formed in 1988 in Belgium by aspiring record mogul Jo Bogaert. This was his stage name;"Pump Up the Jam." This was the song that would define them for their career. It was hugely successful in both Europe and the States, where it bridged dance and hip-hop audiences, and drew pop listeners in as well. But controversy was on the horizon. In an effort to create an "image" for the band, Bogaert hired a Zairian fashion model named Felly to appear on the cover of the group's first album, as well as a music video for "Pump Up the Jam"

Though Technotronic only scored a few hits during its height in the early '90s, those hits were pretty big ones. They led the charge as both the hip-hop and dance worlds were evolving, and defined the moment when they collided. "Pump Up the Jams" is the best example of their work, encapsulating their signature pulsing house beats with twisting word rhymes. Put this song on at a party, and you'll feel like you've crossed through a time warp to 1990.There was a lot of controversy over the song and who really deserved credit for its catchy hooks and ultimate success. Though producer Jo Bogaret tried to steer laurels toward Felly, a fashion model with no knowledge of English and no contribution to the group (other than being a pretty face that might turn a few heads whenever the "Pump Up the Jams" music video was on TV), it was MC Eric and Ya Kid K that ultimately deserved praise. They're still getting that praise when people listen to the song today. Despite sounding a bit dated, there's no denying it's a great party tune, and it will get people moving on the dance floor no matter what year it is or what mood you're in.
