Twin sisters Tegan and Sara Quin form the alternative folk duo known simply as Tegan and Sara. The Calgary-born tandem learned to play piano at a young age and played in some punk bands during their teenage years. As a duet, the Quin sisters originally went by the moniker PLUNK. Along the way they altered their name to the straightforward combination of their first names. Tegan and Sara won a local battle of the bands in Calgary in 1998, jumpstarting their music career. They parlayed the battle of the bands victory into a spot on Lilith Fair and landed a record deal with Vapor in 2000.Later that year Tegan and Sara would release their debut album, This Business of Art. The acoustic vibe and earthy tone featured on most of the record hit home with folk fans, but the sound of the album is not monotonous as the sisters switch gears on several unique-sounding tracks. With a soulful approach to their lyrics, the twins' material exuded a maturity level incongruent with their actual age. They followed up the album's release by touring with the likes of Neil Young. If It Was You followed in 2002, sporting more of a power-pop feel than their acoustic-laden debut. The girls stepped it up in the vocals department on the release, an aspect of their music that is featured heavily throughout the entire cut. Tegan and Sara's third release came in the form of 2004's So Jealous. So Jealous followed through on the foreshadowing of If It Was You, coming equipped with more catchy pop hooks and instrumental experimentation. Blending folk, indie, pop and punk into a melting pot of minor chord configurations, the duo somehow sounds more sunny than sad on the record. The Con, probably their most intricate release to date, arrived in 2007.
