"When thinking of New Wave, Blondie and the Talking Heads may instantly come to mind, but the Cars took the genre by storm after forming in Boston in 1976 and flourished in the early ‘80s.Vocalist/guitarist Ric Ocasek and vocalist/bassist Ben Orr formed the Cars with lead guitarist Elliot Easton, former Modern Lovers drummer Dave Robinson and keyboardist Greg Hawkes in 1976 after collaborating for years prior such as in the folk trio Milkwood and Cap'n Swing (Easton was also a member). The Cars sent the demo tape of ""Just What I Needed"" to popular Boston radio station WBNC in 1977 and the song was an instant hit. They signed with Elektra Records soon after and released an eponymous debut album which spawned the popular singles ""Just What I Needed,"" ""Good Times Roll"" and ""My Best Friend's Girl"" in 1978. A constant on the charts, the Cars released Candy-O in 1979; the album would go platinum thanks to the Top Tenner ""Let's Go.""With two successful albums under their belt, the Cars went in a slightly different direction for their third album, 1980's Panorama, which nonetheless went platinum, and then the band members took some time off before releasing their fourth effort (Ocasek produced for new wave groups Romeo Void and Suicide). Shake It Up was released in 1981 and its title track became the Cars' first top ten single. The quintet took a short hiatus after recording the soundtrack for the short film Chapter-X, Ocasek, Orr and Hawkes all issued solo albums and Ocasek also produced for punk group Bad Brains, and then they met up again for 1984's Heartbeat City, their fifth album. With its revolutionary computer animated video, ""You Might Think"" made it to the top ten and ""Magic,"" ""Hello Again"" and ""Drive"" to the top 40. A greatest hits effort with the new hits ""I'm Not the One"" and ""Tonight She Comes"" followed in 1985 and then the Cars' seventh album, Door to Door, followed in 1987 after another break for the band. Despite spawning the top 20 single ""You Are the Girl,"" rumors of a split circulated and in 1988 the Cars announced their official breakup. All of the former Cars members pursued solo projects, with Ocasek continuing to produce for groups like No Doubt, Nada Surf, Weezer, Hole and Bad Religion. Orr passed away after suffering from pancreatic cancer in 2000 and subsequent to his death a few Cars' releases surfaced."
