"Dream pop lovers the Flaming Lips are widely known throughout the underground music scene for their eclectic and just plain weird personal styles and type of music, and the Oklahoma City rock band is even more obscure than their name or story might suggest. The three-time Grammy Award-winning rock group formed when guitarist Wayne Coyne allegedly stole an entire band's worth of musical instruments from a nearby church hall, recruiting his brother Mark (a vocalist) and bassist Michael Ivins to start a band. Though much speculation circulates about the origin of the band's name (either from a porn film, a drug reference or a dream where Virgin Mary plants a fiery kiss on Wayne) the Flaming Lips nonetheless kept the real meaning behind the name mum, focusing instead on the musical path before them. The Flaming Lips' self-titled debut green vinyl came on scene in 1985, starting the dynasty that would last well into the 2000s. After releasing 1986's Hear it Is and 1987's Oh My Gawd!!!... The Flaming Lips, the band gained incredible exposure by touring alongside the Butthole Surfers. Constantly changing their lineup, the Flaming Lips eventually landed a recording contract with Warner Bros. in 1991, releasing the knockout album Transmissions from the Satellite Heart in 1993. The album hit number one on the Heatseekers chart, propelled by the quirky single ""She Don't Use Jelly."" The Oklahoma big boys played everywhere from MTV stages to episodes of Beverly Hills 90210, loading up the ‘90s with hits like ""Bad Days,"" ""Psychiatric Explorations of the Fetus with Needles"" and ""Brainville.""In 1996 a series of accidents and misfortunes struck the band, leaving the Lips down one member after guitarist Ronald Jones disappeared on a spiritual journey and never returned. Incredibly, the band regrouped and their music was even more intriguing in the following years, releasing hit albums and singles and even winning three Grammys in the 2000s."
