"Representing the ‘90s and ‘00s with a theatrical type of alternative pop/rock music that is often imitated but never surpassed, the New York-bred Goo Goo Dolls have dominated mainstream radio stations' airplay for more than a decade, producing the bittersweet style of music that mothers and daughters continue to bond to together. The Goo Goo Dolls have overcome plenty of obstacles since their inception, proving several times over that their reflective pop/rock music is truly original and unbeatable.Formed in Buffalo, New York in 1985, the Goo Goo Dolls were originally known as the Sex Maggots (a name chosen from an ad in True Detective magazine, requested by a local club owner). Composed of members Johnny Rzeznik (guitar, vocals), Robby Takac (bass) and George Tutuska (drums), the Sex Maggots began their musical journey creating a combination of power pop and rock ‘n' roll music, resembling the makings of the Replacements. Adding a hard rock touch to their musical style, the Goo Goo Dolls (after a name change) released their debut album in 1987, thanks to a recording contract with heavy metal label Metal Blade. Following the self-titled release, the Goo Goo Dolls came out with the 1989 album Jed, followed by 1990's Hold Me Up. Attracting a large fan base of college radio fans, the rockers continued tweaking their pop/rock music, eventually coming up with the breakthrough album Superstar Car Wash in 1993. The album scored incredible success with the public, though the band was still wrapped up in the shadows of the Replacements (and, by then, the Gin Blossoms). It wasn't until 1995 when everything changed for the passionate rock band.In 1995, the acoustic ballad ""Name"" was released, sparking nationwide success for the Goo Goo Dolls. The single landed in the Top Five on the Billboard charts while the band continued to release hit singles and albums, most recently with the 2006 megahit Let Love In."
