"Bands seemed to pour out of the Pacific Northwest in the early '90s, and The Presidents of the United States of America was among them. But while most bands fit neatly into the grunge or alternative rock genre, with tortured lyrics and hard, punk-influenced rock, The Presidents seemed to be in it solely for a laugh. They started out as more of a novelty band, writing ridiculous songs that, with the aid of some colorful videos aired on MTV, became huge hits. The Presidents formed in 1990 in Seattle, where vocalist and two-string bassitar Chris Ballew and three-string guitbassist Dave Dederer decided to join together. They had grown up together, had a similar sense of humor and enjoyed sharing it with the local music scene, where they were an underground hit. Drummer Jason Finn convinced the band to take him on in 1993. Not long after, they released their self-titled debut album, earning them attention from the major labels. After Columbia signed them, they re-released the debut.""Lump,"" a hit single off the record, became ubiquitous on the radio, as did ""Kitty"" and ""Peaches."" ""Peaches"" went on to also become a hit music video on MTV. The debut reached double-platinum, and a follow-up in 1996, The Presidents of the United States of America II was also successful. The band broke up in '97, deciding to spend more time with family. Though there were talks about releasing another album with collaboration from rump-lover Sir Mix-A-Lot, nothing ever came of them. No new material appeared until 2000, when they got back together for a third record, Freaked Out and Small. 2004 saw the release of Love Everybody, and in 2008 they released These Are the Good Times People."
