"Following the wave of power pop founders like the Raspberries and Big Star in the 1970s, the Detroit bigwigs the Romantics eventually built an empire of their own, complete with bouffant hairstyles and matching retro outfits. The Romantics remain one of the most celebrated power pop groups in history, and thanks to hit songs like ""What I Like About You,"" this Detroit megaband is one remarkable act that won't soon fade behind the curtain of modern pop music.Originally consisting of singer/guitarist Wally Palmar, singer/drummer Jimmy Marinos, guitarist Mike Skill and bassist Richie Cole, the Detroit-based Romantics formed in Michigan in 1977. The rowdy new wave musicians performed incredible high-energy live shows, gaining a reputation and local following immediately. Propelled by these live performances, the Romantics released a single on their own before a vivacious performance in Toronto led to the incidental run-in with the punk/power pop indie label Bomp! Inking a deal with Bomp!, the Romantics spent the rest of the ‘70s gearing up for their self-titled album, released in 1980. Featuring the smash hit ""That's What I Like About You,"" The Romantics skyrocketed into mainstream success, spawning the follow-up album National Broadcast released the same year. 1983 contained the Romantics' best-selling album ever; In Heat featured the hit singles ""Talking in Your Sleep"" and ""One in a Million.""Although enjoying the massive shower of fans and success that came along with the 1980s, the Romantics also suffered a few bumps in the road that resulted in Marinos' exit from the band (and Dave Petratos' induction, consequently). While the Romantics continued rocking the nation through the ‘80s and into the ‘90s, the band ‘s hit albums started decreasing. Trucking through it all, the Romantics still continue to tour the nation today, even though they haven't released a full-length studio album in more than 20 years."
