The concept behind the band The Verve Pipe was first conceived in 1990 when brothers Brian and Brad Vander Ark arrived on the music scene in Grand Rapids, Michigan with their then band, Johnny With An Eye. The competition was strong during that time, with rival band Water From The Pool making additional waves in the local music scene. Drummer Donny Brown from the latter band decided to eventually join forces with the Vander Ark brothers and thus, The Verve Pipe was born. The Verve Pipe started with their own indie label, LMNO Pop! and they released the debut album I've Suffered a Head Injury in 1992. "Ark of the Envious," "Clean Break" and "Oceanside." The album was received fairly well by critics, although it was not an instant smash hit. The Verve Pipe quickly followed their opening act with another record, this one titled Pop Smear. This time they received a bit more respect from the critics and churned out some more eclectic tracks like "What You Wanted," which embodied a folksy sound and "Honest," with a distinctively Spanish flair. Of course The Verve Pipe hadn't experienced their moment in the sun quite yet. That would come with their 1996 release of Villains, which featured the number one gold single "The Freshman." With the success of Villains, their career soared and they toured around the world, booking over 300 dates in various cities.Three years later The Verve Pipe pleased their fans with their self titled album, which took a more adventurous approach in musical style with the songs "Supergig" and "She Has Faces." 2001 saw the release of their most recent album as a band, Underneath. The song "Colorful" was the most prominent track from the record. Today the band occasionally tours as a group and Brian Vander Ark has pursued a solo career. There is no official word on the current status of the band, but their songs have been a major contribution to the indie rock music world.
