"The aptly named Weather Girls are most famous for their song ""It's Raining Men,"" but the plus-sized duo would stay in the music business for years, proving their true artistry. The group was made up of Izora Rhodes Armstead and Martha Wash. Armstead was born in Texas but grew up in San Francisco, California. She grew up listening to blues music. She started singing gospel at a young age, which is how she met Wash. Wash grew up on gospel music and also had an interest in the sounds of Motown. Their gospel roots would follow them even into the seemingly-opposite scene of disco. One of their first gigs and their introduction to disco was singing for the cross-dressing disco singer Sylvester. They sang on Sylvester's hits like ""Disco (Disco Heat)."" The duo decided to break off on their own and renamed themselves Two Tons O' Fun. The duo got a record deal and released two albums, a self-titled one in 1979 and Backatcha in 1980. In 1982, they stumbled upon a song by Paul Jabara and Paul Shaffer called ""It's Raining Men."" Other artists had already turned down the song, but the sound was a perfect fit for Armstead and Wash. When they signed to Columbia, they changed their name to the Weather Girls. The album was on their 1983 album, Success. The song was a hit, but the spotlight didn't last long The group soon broke up, but Wash continued on in the industry. She was a successful session singer and sang on the C C Music Factory track ""Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)"" and ""You're My One and Only (True Love)."" She soon had her own record contract and started producing charting hits in the 1990s. Armstead later moved to Germany and worked with her daughter singing. She passed away in 2004."
