Walter Egan

Walter Egan Biography

"The 1970s featured many innovative rockers, one of which was Walter Egan. Egan was born in Jamaica, New York on July 12, 1948. His first musical endeavor that brought him any attention was when the teamed up with John Zambetti on guitars to form a band called the Malibooz. The East Coast-based band wanted to create a group that played their unique version of surf music. They started playing in local venues and gaining a decent following of fans. Their popularity had grown so much by the mid 1960s that the group was able to perform at World's Fair in New York in 1964.The duo relocated the Washington, D.C. and added in Chris Murray and Annie McLoone, forming a group called Sageworth and Drums. The music scene in D.C. was growing rapidly at the time and Sageworth and Drums soon rose to prominence in the city. They moved to Boston in the early 1970s, but the band broke up after only a couple of years there. Egan traveled to Los Angeles, led there by Emmylou Harris, who recorded one of his compositions in 1973. He found spots on bands like one for Linda Ronstadt, helping him gain enough recognition to launch a solo career. He released his debut solo album Fundamental Roll in 1977. He teamed up with Lindsey Buckingham and Richard Dashut as producers to release the album Not Shy in 1978. His sophomore release featured the song he is most remembered for, ""Magnet and Steel."" His follow up albums, Hi-Fi and The Last Stroll, did not find the same success, causing Egan to team back up with Zambatti as the Malibooz in the early 1980s. He released another solo album in 1983 along with a Malibooz album earlier, but other than that he stayed rather quiet until the 1990s, where he released a Malibooz Christmas album as well as a solo album. He has since released other albums like 2002's Apocalypso Now. "
