"Whodini was formed in New York City in 1981. The group was made up of DJ Drew ""Grandmaster Dee"" Carter who was the leader of the group. With him were ""Jalil Hutchins and John ""Ecstasy"" Fletcher. These three were sons of the prolific rap era of the early ‘80s who laid the foundation for the new jack swing movement. They were the first group to add an R&B twist to their music, and became some of the most influential innovators of their genre. The group also produced the first rap song to have an accompanying video when they released ""Magic's Wand.""Their self-titled debut album was released in 1983, stetting the group up with their first hits ""Rap Attack,"" ""The Haunted House of Funk,"" and a reworking of the song ""Monster Mash."" Their second album was Escape released in 1984, which was a much better album than the first, and subsequently reached number 35 on The Billboard 200 and number five on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. Back In Black followed in 1986, and the group had become icons of their genre as the first rap act to become truly successful. This album matched the success of the first on the 200 and surpassed it on the R&B/Hip-Hop charts. 1987 sadly marked the last successful album that the trio produced, Open Sesame reached number 30 on The Billboard 200 and number eight on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums before the group took some time off to deal with label problems. They never truly recovered although they made a resemblance of a comeback with Bag-A-Trix was released on March 19, 1991 and had a presence in the charts, but the group once again fell apart. Their last attempt was with Six on September 17, 1996, but despite making a showing in Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, it inexplicably vanished from the market not long after its release."
