"Dissent was created in 1997 by Gregory Howe, who is also the president and founder of Wide Hive Records. Hailing from the Bay area of San Fransico, Howe brought together a group of excellent artists to produce the jazz-funk/electronic/trip-hop/acid jazz that the band has become known for. The band features the vocals of Natalie Sanchez, while also featuring instrumentalists Michael Rinta on trombone, Tim Hyland on flute, Calvin Keys with guitar, Ron E. Beck on drums and Jessy Seamore as the percussionist. The band specifically captures the ‘70s jazz-funk that is a feature interest in the music scene of Northern California.Dissent, who spell their name with a lower-case ""d,"" released their eponymous debut record for Wide Hive on August 11, 1998 and then re-released it in 2001. The album presented the band to the world, with their strange mix of genres that the band smoothly skims through without ever alighting on a particular one. Despite this oddity, which ensures that the band does not pick one specific genre to be their own, they have still managed to create a solid fan base. For those who are looking for the smooth sounds of jazz and the contrasting audio force of electronica, then dissent is a great band to listen to because of their seamless and undeniably unique melding of two sounds. Their eclectic mix of musical genres is definitely something worth sinking your teeth into.Bleeding Together was the band's second installment, released on the September 24th, 2002. The album had a much stronger sound of electronic than the previous album. It is, however, much more musical than the usually harsh or abrasive sounds of electronica. The other albums by the band include Swap Meet Stars from 2004 and Primal Deconstruction from 2005."
